Yangshuo Travel Guide for Foreigners
Updated: July 25, 2026 · TravelChinaTip
Yangshuo (阳朔) is the town every Guilin traveler ends up in — a compact backpacker hub surrounded by limestone karst peaks, rice paddies, and the Yulong River. Most arrive via the Li River cruise from Guilin (downstream) or a one-hour bus. Foreign travelers have come here since the 1980s, so English is more common than almost anywhere in rural China. Allow 2–3 nights minimum; most visitors extend once they start cycling through the landscape.
Best Time to Visit
April through October is peak season — warm weather for cycling and bamboo rafting. April–May and September–October offer the best balance of clear skies and manageable crowds. Summer (June–August) is hot, humid, and busy but the rice paddies are vivid green. Winter is misty and quiet — karst peaks look mystical in fog, though some outdoor operators reduce hours. Avoid Golden Week (October 1–7) when West Street hotels triple in price. Rain is common year-round — flexible plans help.
3-Day Sample Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive & Countryside Cycling
Arrive by Li River cruise from Guilin (4–5 hrs, ¥200–400) or bus from Guilin Bus Station (1 hr, ¥20–30). Check into a guesthouse near West Street or the Yulong River valley. Afternoon: rent an e-bike (¥40/day) and cycle toward Jiuxian Village along the Yulong River — flat paths through karst peaks and rice fields. Dinner: beer fish (啤酒鱼) at a riverside restaurant. Evening stroll on West Street for live music and street food.
Day 2 — Yulong River & Xingping
Morning bamboo raft on the Yulong River — Jinji to Gongnong Bridge section (¥200–260 per raft, seats 2). Calmer than the Li River cruise. Afternoon: taxi or bus 20 km to Xingping town — the view on the Chinese ¥20 banknote is photographed here from the riverbank. Hike up Xianggong Hill (¥60) for the classic panoramic karst sunrise shot (go before 7 a.m.). Return to Yangshuo for dinner.
Day 3 — Moon Hill or Rock Climbing
Option A: Cycle or taxi to Moon Hill — a natural arch you can hike through (¥15 entry, 45-minute climb). Option B: Rock climbing with a guide from a West Street shop (¥300–500 half day, gear included, suitable for beginners). Afternoon: Silver Cave (银子岩, ¥65) if you want an underground karst cave, or relax at a riverside cafe. Depart via bus to Guilin West Station for high-speed trains, or stay another night — most travelers do.
Local Transportation Guide
From Guilin: Li River tourist cruise (scenic, slow) or direct bus from Guilin Bus Station (¥20–30, hourly). Guilin West high-speed station is 30 km from Yangshuo — taxi ¥80. Within Yangshuo: e-bikes and bicycles are the best transport (¥20–40/day, passport deposit). Taxis and DiDi work for Xingping and Moon Hill trips. No metro. West Street is walkable but traffic on the main road is heavy — stick to riverside paths when cycling. Nearest airport: Guilin Liangjiang (KWL), 90 minutes by car.
Foreigner-Friendly Food Guide
Beer fish (啤酒鱼) is the signature — whole river fish cooked with local beer and tomatoes. Guilin rice noodles (桂林米粉) are the cheap breakfast staple. West Street has the widest foreigner-friendly menu in Guangxi: Western breakfasts, Indian, and pizza alongside Chinese options. Street BBQ and mango smoothies line the night market. Spice levels are milder than Sichuan. Farmhouse restaurants in the Yulong valley serve fresh river fish and organic vegetables — better value than West Street tourist traps.
Ticket Booking Tips
Li River cruise: book through hotel, Trip.com, or Guilin tourist agencies — morning departures are best. Yulong River bamboo raft: buy at Jinji dock or through guesthouse; no advance booking needed off-season. Xianggong Hill: ¥60, pay at gate. Moon Hill: ¥15. Silver Cave: ¥65. Impression Liu Sanjie show: ¥268–480, book on Trip.com. Rock climbing: book day-of at Climber or Blue Lotus shops on West Street. Most attractions accept passport at entry.
Travel Do's & Don'ts
- Do rent an e-bike — it is the best way to experience the karst countryside at your own pace.
- Do stay at least 2 nights — one day is not enough for cycling, rafting, and Xingping.
- Do hike Xianggong Hill at sunrise for the iconic panorama — clouds roll in by 9 a.m.
- Do book Li River cruise for the morning slot — afternoon light is harsher for photos.
- Don't eat only on West Street — riverside farmhouse restaurants are cheaper and better.
- Don't ride e-bikes on the main highway at night — no lights and fast buses.
