Guilin Travel Guide for Foreigners

Limestone karst peaks rising above the Li River near Guilin

Guilin's limestone peaks and the Li River belong on every China wish list — the landscape that appears on the 20-yuan note is real, and misty mornings make it look even better. Most travelers use Guilin as a base for a Li River cruise to Yangshuo and a day among the rice terraces of Longsheng. The city itself is smaller and less polished than Beijing or Shanghai, but that is part of the appeal: slower traffic, lower prices, and scenery that starts the moment you leave the airport.

Best Time to Visit

April through October covers the best weather, with April–May and September–October as peak scenery seasons — green rice paddies, clear river water, and moderate temperatures. Summer is hot and humid but lush; sudden rainstorms are common, so flexible scheduling helps. Winter is misty and quiet — the karst hills look ethereal in fog, though river cruises may reduce frequency. Avoid Golden Week (early October) when Li River boats and Yangshuo hotels book out weeks ahead. Spring Festival brings closures at smaller guesthouses and restaurants.

3-Day Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Li River cruise from Mopanshan Pier (Guilin) to Yangshuo — the classic 4-hour journey past karst peaks, buffalo scenes, and fishing villages. Book a morning departure through your hotel or Trip.com; buses transfer you from Guilin hotels to the pier. Explore Yangshuo's West Street for lunch, then rent bicycles or e-bikes to cycle the Yulong River valley (the most scenic half-day ride in the region). Overnight in Yangshuo — guesthouses with river views are worth the splurge.

Day 2

Morning in Yangshuo: bamboo rafting on the Yulong River (¥160 per raft, two passengers) or a hike up Xianggong Hill for panoramic karst views — start before 8 a.m. to beat tour buses. Afternoon: return to Guilin by bus (¥20, 90 minutes). Visit Reed Flute Cave or Elephant Trunk Hill if time allows. Evening: Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise in Guilin — illuminated pagodas and bridges (book same-day at the dock).

Day 3

Longsheng Rice Terraces day trip — drive 2.5 hours to Longji (Dragon's Backbone) terraces. Hike to Ping'an Zhuang village (easier, 1-hour walk) or Dazhai Yao village (longer, more dramatic views). Lunch at a farmhouse restaurant overlooking the terraces. Return to Guilin by evening. If you skip Longsheng, spend the day at Seven Star Park or take a cooking class in Yangshuo before your departure.

Local Transportation Guide

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) is 28 km from downtown — airport buses (¥20) and taxis (¥80–100) connect to the city. Guilin North and Guilin Station serve high-speed trains from Guangzhou (3 hours), Shanghai (7 hours), and Kunming. Local buses cost ¥1–2 but have limited English signage — DiDi is the easier option for foreigners. Li River cruise packages include pier transfers; do not try to reach Mopanshan Pier independently unless you enjoy logistics puzzles. Yangshuo is 65 km south — direct buses from Guilin Bus Station depart every 20 minutes. E-bike rental in Yangshuo (¥40/day) requires a passport deposit. For Longsheng, hire a private driver (¥400–500 round trip) or join a group tour — public transport is slow and infrequent.

Foreigner-Friendly Food Guide

Guilin rice noodles (mifen) are the local breakfast — order "dry" (ban) or "soup" (tang) style at any morning stall. Beer fish (pijiu yu) is Yangshuo's signature dinner, cooked with local beer and tomatoes. Stuffed lijiang snails and bamboo rice are worth trying at farmhouse restaurants. Yangshuo's West Street has the widest foreigner-friendly menu selection in the region, including Western options after days of Chinese food. Spice levels are milder than Sichuan. River fish is fresh but ask about bones — many dishes serve whole fish. Guilin osmanthus tea and sugar make good souvenirs from specialty shops near Zhengyang Pedestrian Street.

Ticket Booking Tips

Li River cruise tickets (¥210–360 depending on boat class) should be booked 2–3 days ahead through Trip.com, your hotel, or CITS — morning departures sell out in peak season. Passport required at boarding. Yangshuo bamboo rafting tickets are sold on-site; arrive before 9 a.m. on weekends. Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill accept walk-up tickets (¥90 and ¥55). Longsheng terrace entry is ¥80 — paid at the scenic area gate. Two Rivers Four Lakes night cruise (¥210) can be booked at the dock or through your hotel; the 7:30 p.m. sailing is most popular.

Travel Do's & Don'ts

  • Do book the Li River cruise through official channels — pier touts sell overpriced or cancelled tickets.
  • Do spend at least one night in Yangshuo; a day trip from Guilin rushes the best parts.
  • Do wear sturdy shoes for terrace hikes — paths are steep, stone, and often wet.
  • Do carry cash for rural areas — Longsheng villages may not accept mobile pay.
  • Don't swim in the Li River — currents are strong and pollution varies by season.
  • Don't cycle Yulong River paths in midday summer heat — start early and carry water.
