7-Day Classic China Itinerary for Foreign Travelers
Updated: July 25, 2026 · TravelChinaTip
This seven-day route hits China’s greatest hits for first-time visitors: imperial Beijing, ancient Xi’an, and modern Shanghai. It is designed for independent travelers with a tourist visa (or eligible visa-free entry), comfortable with high-speed trains, and willing to walk 15,000+ steps most days.
Best season: April–May or September–October for mild weather. Avoid Golden Week (early October) and Chinese New Year when crowds and prices spike.
Budget (excluding international flights): Mid-range travelers should plan roughly USD 800–1,200 per person — hotels, high-speed trains, meals, entrance tickets, and local transport. You can spend less with hostels and street food, or more with premium hotels and private guides at the Great Wall.
Day 1: Arrive in Beijing
Land at Beijing Capital (PEK) or Daxing (PKX). Take the Airport Express or a Didi to your hotel near the Forbidden City or Wangfujing — central location saves time all week. If you arrive before 3 pm, stroll Wangfujing snack street and adjust to the time zone. Buy an eSIM or activate yours on airport Wi-Fi. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay if you have not already — see our payment guide.
Stay: Dongcheng district (Forbidden City, hutongs)
Day 2: Forbidden City & Temple of Heaven
Book Forbidden City tickets online in advance (passport required at entry). Allow three to four hours inside. Walk or taxi south to Temple of Heaven park for late afternoon — locals practice tai chi and play cards under ancient cypress trees. Dinner in a hutong: try jianbing (savory crepe) from a street cart and Peking duck at a mid-range restaurant (Da Dong or Siji Minfu — book ahead).
Day 3: Great Wall & Hutongs
Morning trip to Mutianyu or Jinshanling section of the Great Wall — Mutianyu is easier with a cable car; Jinshanling is less crowded and more scenic. Organize via Didi, a hotel day tour, or public bus. Return by mid-afternoon and explore hutongs by bicycle or on foot: Nanluoguxiang, Houhai lakes, and Drum Tower area. Cap the day with a hutong bar or tea house you chose yourself — China is very safe for solo evenings; see our solo travel safety guide.
Day 4: High-Speed Train to Xi'an
Take a morning G-train from Beijing West or Beijing South to Xi’an North — about 4.5 hours. Book second class on Trip.com at least a week ahead. Check in at a hotel near the city wall. Afternoon: rent a bike or walk the ancient city wall (South Gate is the main entrance). Evening in the Muslim Quarter — biangbiang noodles, lamb skewers, and pomegranate juice from street vendors.
Day 5: Terracotta Warriors
The Terracotta Army is 40 km east of Xi’an — allow a full morning. Take Tourist Bus 5 (306) from Xi’an Railway Station or book a Didi. Hire an official guide at the site or use an audio guide; context makes the pits far more meaningful. Return by 2 pm. If time allows, visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and watch the north square fountain show in the evening (times vary by season).
Day 6: Fly or Train to Shanghai
Option A: Morning flight Xi’an → Shanghai (about 2.5 hours) — fastest if you want more Shanghai time. Option B: High-speed train (6–7 hours) — scenic and no airport hassle; book G-train Xi’an North to Shanghai Hongqiao. Afternoon check-in near the Bund or French Concession. Walk the Bund at sunset, then cross to Pudong for skyline views from Riverside or a observation deck (Shanghai Tower or Oriental Pearl).
Day 7: Shanghai & Departure
Morning in the French Concession — tree-lined streets, coffee shops, and the Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen if history interests you. Visit Yu Garden and Old City in the afternoon if you skipped them, or explore Tianzifang’s laneway shops. Head to Pudong Airport (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA) depending on your flight — allow 2+ hours for PVG; Hongqiao is closer if you took the train from Xi’an.
Transport Between Cities
Beijing → Xi’an: G-train, 4.5 hours, from Beijing West or Beijing South to Xi’an North. Second-class fare roughly CNY 500–600. Preferred over flying for city-center-to-city-center convenience.
Xi’an → Shanghai: Flight (~2.5 hours plus airport time) or G-train (6–7 hours, Xi’an North to Shanghai Hongqiao). Trains are comfortable and reliable; flights save time if booked early at a good price.
Luggage tip: Pack light. High-speed stations involve long walks and stairs. A 40L backpack or medium suitcase works; large bags slow you down at every transfer.
FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai?
Yes for a first overview if you accept a fast pace: two full days in Beijing, one full day plus travel buffer in Xi'an, and one to two days in Shanghai. You will see headline sights, not every neighborhood.
Should I fly or take the train between cities?
Beijing to Xi'an is best by high-speed train (~4.5 hours). Xi'an to Shanghai can be a flight (~2.5 hours) or a longer G-train (6–7 hours). Book on Trip.com with your passport name.
Do I need a tour for this itinerary?
No. Independent travelers can handle this route with Trip.com tickets, hotel bookings, metro/DiDi, and timed attraction reservations such as the Forbidden City.
What should I book before arriving?
Visa or visa-free eligibility, eSIM or roaming plan, Alipay/WeChat Pay setup, Forbidden City tickets, Terracotta Warriors tickets, and intercity trains or flights.
