How to Book China Train Tickets on 12306 with a Passport

Short answer: foreigners can book China high-speed trains on the official Railway 12306 app with a passport — at face-value fares, with no third-party markup. Switch to the English Version, register, finish real-name verification, then search and pay. Tickets usually open 15 days ahead (Beijing time).

Third-party sites often add a service fee on top of the same seat. 12306 is the railway’s own channel, so you pay the published price. Setup takes longer than booking on Trip.com, but it is worth it if you ride often or want the cheapest ticket.

Before You Start

• Tickets release about 15 days in advance. Weekend and holiday trains sell out quickly — book as soon as your date appears.
• The English Version only supports foreign passports. Chinese mainland passports cannot register on that interface.
• You cannot buy tickets until passport real-name verification is approved. Do this a day or two before you need to book, not the morning of travel.

Step 1: Switch 12306 to English

1. Install the official Railway 12306 app from your app store.
2. Tap Me (bottom right), then the gear icon for Settings.
3. Open Version Switch and choose English Version.
4. Restart the app so the English interface loads.

Step 2: Register with Your Passport

1. Tap Register and set document type to Passport.
2. Enter details exactly as on your passport:
   • Full name — same spelling and order as the machine-readable zone (MRZ). Do not swap surname and given name.
   • Passport number, date of birth, nationality, expiry date
   • A working email (activation link goes here)
3. Set a password, agree to the terms, and activate via the email link. Check Advertisement, Subscription, and Spam folders if nothing arrives.

Step 3: Complete Passport Real-Name Verification

You cannot purchase tickets until this step is done.

1. Go to Me → Passenger (or Passenger Information) → Add Passenger.
2. Choose Passport and upload a clear photo of the bio page.
3. Photo rules: no glare or shadow; the full MRZ at the bottom must be readable.
4. Submit and wait — review usually takes minutes, sometimes up to 24 hours.

If online review fails, take your original passport to any station ticket window for free manual verification. A phone photo or PDF is not enough at the counter.

Step 4: Search and Book

1. Enter departure, arrival, and date. Use the app’s English or pinyin station names (e.g. Hong Kong West Kowloon, Guangzhou South).
2. Filter for G / D / C high-speed trains when you want bullet-train speed.
3. Choose a seat: Second class is the usual pick; first and business cost more for space.
4. Select your verified passenger, confirm the order, and pay within 30 minutes — unpaid holds cancel automatically.

Step 5: Payment Methods

• International cards — Visa, Mastercard, and JCB are supported; failures are common enough that a mobile-pay backup helps.

Step 6: At the Station

Departing from a mainland station

1. Arrive at least 40 minutes early (60 at huge hubs like Beijing South or Shanghai Hongqiao).
2. Pass security — bags and electronics in trays; no knives or flammables.
3. Find the waiting hall listed on your ticket or the big departure boards. Stations have several halls; the wrong one can make you miss the train.
4. Ticket check:
   • Automatic passport gate — open the bio page, lay it flat on the scanner. Not every gate reads foreign passports; if it fails, use the manual lane.
   • Manual lane — hand your original passport to staff; they check the booking and open the gate. Often the smoother option for first-time visitors.
5. On the platform, confirm the train number on the display before boarding — several trains may share a platform. Follow carriage numbers on the ground or screens to your coach and seat.

Departing from Hong Kong West Kowloon

Hong Kong ↔ mainland high-speed rail uses a one station, two immigration checks flow. Budget 60–90 minutes.

1. Enter at Level B1 Ticketing Hall and clear luggage security.
2. Go down to Level B3 Departure Concourse.
3. Complete Hong Kong departure immigration, then Mainland China entry immigration, in that order.
4. Find your waiting zone and boarding gate. Gates typically open about 15 minutes before departure and close about 5 minutes before.
5. Scan your passport onto the platform and double-check the train number before you board.

At the destination, exit via automatic passport gates or the staffed channel with your physical passport. A paper ticket is not required for boarding; souvenir printouts are optional at self-service machines.

Common Mistakes

• Surname and given name reversed — verification or the gate fails
• Blurry, reflective, or cropped passport photos rejected in review
• Starting verification the day you travel (no buffer for rejection)
• Travelling with only a photo of your passport — staff need the original
