Dali Travel Guide for Foreigners

Dali was the capital of the medieval Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms — today it is Yunnan's most laid-back stop on the classic Kunming → Dali → Lijiang route. Dali Old Town (大理古城) sits between the snow-capped Cangshan mountains (苍山) and the vast Erhai Lake (洱海), with whitewashed Bai minority courtyard houses, red wooden gates, and a pace that forces you to slow down. Foreign travelers often stay 2–3 nights here — longer than planned — before heading north to Lijiang.
Best Time to Visit
March through May and September through November are ideal — clear skies, comfortable 15–25°C days, and wildflowers on Cangshan slopes. Summer (June–August) is the rainy season with afternoon showers but lush green hills. Winter is dry and sunny with cold nights (0–15°C) — fewer tourists, excellent visibility for mountain photography. Avoid Golden Week (October 1–7) when Old Town guesthouses sell out and Erhai ring-road traffic jams. Dali's altitude (1,900 m) means strong UV year-round.
3-Day Sample Itinerary
Day 1 — Old Town & Three Pagodas
Morning: explore Dali Old Town's north-south axis — Foreigner Street (洋人街) for cafes, Renmin Road for local shops, and the restored city walls at the north gate. Afternoon: Chongsheng Temple Three Pagodas (崇圣寺三塔) — three 1,000-year-old pagodas framed by Cangshan, ¥75 entry. Allow 2 hours. Evening: try Bai-style grilled cheese (乳扇) and rose petal pastries at a night market stall. Dali is famous for edible roses — rose jam and rose cakes make good souvenirs.
Day 2 — Erhai Lake
Rent an e-bike or hire a driver for the Erhai ring road (环洱海) — 130 km, best done in sections. Popular stops: Shuanglang (双廊) fishing village, Xiaoputuo island temple, and the tree tunnel near Fengyangyi. E-bike rental ¥40–80/day from Old Town shops (passport deposit required). Alternatively, take a lake cruise from Longkan Pier (¥80–150). Sunset from the west shore with Cangshan backdrop is the classic Dali photo. Lunch at a lakeside farmhouse for Erhai lake fish (酸辣鱼).
Day 3 — Cangshan Mountain or Departure
Morning: Cangshan cable car (苍山索道) from Zhonghe Temple station — ride above the clouds, hike the Jade Belt Cloud Path (玉带云游路) at 2,800 m if weather permits (¥140 round-trip cable car + ¥40 scenic area). Clouds close the path in rain — check conditions. Afternoon: last Old Town shopping or transfer to Dali Railway Station for the 1.5-hour train to Lijiang. Dali Fengyi Airport (DLU) has limited domestic flights.
Local Transportation Guide
Dali Railway Station (大理站) is 15 km from Old Town — bus 8 or taxi/DiDi (¥30–40). Dali Station serves high-speed trains from Kunming (2 hrs, ¥145), Lijiang (1.5 hrs, ¥80), and Guangzhou. Old Town is compact and walkable — no metro. E-bikes are the standard tourist transport for Erhai. Taxis are cheap but drivers may not speak English; save destinations in Chinese. From Kunming: G-train to Dali Station is the fastest option. Night buses exist but trains are more comfortable.
Foreigner-Friendly Food Guide
Bai minority cuisine emphasizes fresh lake fish, cheese, and flowers. Must-tries: grilled rushan cheese (烤乳扇), sour-spicy Erhai fish (酸辣鱼), Bai-style cured ham, and rose pastries. Old Town has Western cafes catering to backpackers — good for a break from Chinese food. The Bad Monkey and Bakery 88 are long-running foreigner favorites. Spice levels are mild. Vegetarians do well with mushroom dishes and tofu. Avoid "Bai silver" jewelry scams — overpriced souvenirs pushed aggressively in Old Town shops.

Three Pagodas: ¥75, buy at gate or Trip.com. Cangshan cable car: ¥140 round-trip plus ¥40 scenic area fee — weather-dependent, check morning of visit. Erhai cruise: book at pier or through guesthouse. Old Town: free, open 24 hours. High-speed trains to/from Kunming and Lijiang sell out during holidays — book 15 days ahead on Trip.com. Most attractions accept foreign passports at entry.

- Do rent an e-bike for Erhai — it is the best way to see the lake at your own pace.
- Do try grilled rushan cheese from a street vendor — unique to this region.
- Do book Cangshan cable car only on clear mornings — clouds obscure the view above 2,500 m.
- Do allow 2+ nights — Dali rewards slow travel more than a rushed day trip.
- Don't buy "authentic Bai silver" from aggressive shop touts — industrial alloy at jade prices.
- Don't cycle the full Erhai ring road in one day if you are not fit — 130 km with hills is exhausting.
