7-Day Yunnan Itinerary

Yunnan Province is China's most diverse corner — ethnic minorities, snow peaks, ancient towns, and a climate that stays mild when the rest of the country freezes or swelters. This seven-day route covers the classic northbound path: Kunming → Dali → Lijiang, with high-speed trains between cities and enough time in each stop to avoid checklist tourism.
Best season: March–May or September–November. Avoid Golden Week (October 1–7) — Lijiang and Dali sell out.
Budget (excluding international flights): USD 500–750 per person mid-range — Yunnan is cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai for hotels and food.

Days 1–2: Kunming
Day 1: Arrive & Green Lake

Day 2: Stone Forest
Full-day trip to Shilin Stone Forest — high-speed train Kunming South → Shilin West (30 min) or bus from East Station. Walk the limestone pillar formations (¥130 entry). Return by late afternoon. Pack for Dali tomorrow; book the morning G-train on Trip.com.
Days 3–4: Dali
Day 3: Kunming → Dali Old Town
Morning G-train to Dali (2 hrs, ¥145). Taxi to Old Town. Afternoon: wander cobblestone lanes, Three Pagodas (¥75), and try grilled rushan cheese (烤乳扇) from a street vendor. Dali's pace is deliberately slow — embrace it.
Day 4: Erhai Lake
Rent an e-bike and cycle a section of the Erhai ring road — Shuanglang village, lakeside temples, and Cangshan mountain backdrop. Alternatively, take a lake cruise from Longkan Pier. Evening: rose petal pastries and Bai-style cured ham for dinner.
Days 5–6: Lijiang
Day 5: Dali → Lijiang Old Town
Morning train or bus to Lijiang (1.5 hrs). Check into a guesthouse in or near Old Town — use a backpack, not roller luggage on cobblestones. Afternoon: Mufu Palace, canal walks, and Black Dragon Pool for the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflection photo. Take it easy — you are at 2,400 m.
Day 6: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Full-day trip to Yulong Snow Mountain — book the combined ticket on Trip.com (¥200+). Glacier Park cable car to 4,680 m if your body handles altitude; otherwise explore Blue Moon Valley at the base. Buy oxygen canisters (¥60) at the visitor center if needed. Return to Old Town for a final Naxi dinner — cured pork rib hotpot (腊排骨) is the local specialty.
Day 7: Departure
Morning free time in Old Town for last-minute tea and handicraft shopping. Fly out of Lijiang Sanyi Airport (LJG) — connections to Kunming, Chengdu, and Shanghai. Alternatively, train back to Kunming (3 hrs) for a connecting international flight from KMG. Allow extra time for Old Town cobblestone transit to the airport.

Transport Between Cities

Is altitude a problem on a 7-day Yunnan trip?
Kunming and Dali are usually fine for most travelers. Lijiang sits around 2,400 m — take day one easy. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable cars go much higher; skip the glacier park if you feel unwell.
Can I do Tiger Leaping Gorge in this 7-day plan?
Not comfortably. Use this week for Kunming–Dali–Lijiang, then add 2–3 days if you want the gorge hike.
What is the best season for this Yunnan itinerary?
March–May and September–November are the most comfortable. Summers bring more rain but lush scenery.
Do I need a guide in Dali and Lijiang?
No for Old Town walks, Erhai cycling, and standard Jade Dragon tickets. Hire a guide only for remote hikes or if you want deeper cultural context.
