Lijiang Travel Guide for Foreigners
Updated: July 25, 2026 · TravelChinaTip
Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) is a UNESCO World Heritage site — a maze of cobblestone lanes, canal bridges, and wooden Naxi houses beneath the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山). At 2,400 meters elevation, Lijiang feels like a different China: minority culture, snow peaks, and a nightlife scene that runs until midnight. It is the northern anchor of the Yunnan route after Kunming and Dali, and the gateway to Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La.
Best Time to Visit
March through May and September through November offer clear mountain views and comfortable daytime temperatures (12–22°C). Summer brings rain but lush green valleys. Winter is cold (nights below 0°C) but dry with spectacular snow-capped peak views — pack warm layers. Avoid Golden Week and the February Spring Festival — Lijiang Old Town becomes impossibly crowded. Check Jade Dragon Snow Mountain weather before booking cable car tickets — clouds ruin the glacier views.
3-Day Sample Itinerary
Day 1 — Lijiang Old Town
Morning: enter via Mufu Palace (木府) — the former Naxi chieftain's mansion, ¥40, 1.5 hours. Afternoon: wander Old Town canals — Sifang Street (四方街) square, Wuyi Street handicrafts, and Black Dragon Pool Park (黑龙潭) for the classic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflection photo (¥0 with Old Town maintenance fee receipt). Evening: Naxi ancient music performance at Dayan Naxi Ancient Music Hall (¥120–160) or explore bar street if that is your scene.
Day 2 — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Full-day trip to Yulong Snow Mountain scenic area — buy the combined ticket (¥200+ including entry, cable car, and shuttle bus) at the visitor center or via Trip.com. Glacier Park cable car rises to 4,680 m — buy oxygen canisters (¥60) at the base if altitude-sensitive. Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷) turquoise pools at the base are stunning and less altitude-stressing. Impression Lijiang outdoor show (by Zhang Yimou) in the valley if open. Return to Old Town by evening — altitude day is exhausting.
Day 3 — Shuhe Ancient Town or Tiger Leaping Gorge
Option A: Shuhe Ancient Town (束河古镇) — quieter sister town 4 km north, horse-carriage lanes and fewer crowds, ¥30 maintenance fee. Option B: Day trip to Tiger Leaping Gorge upper trail (虎跳峡) — 2-hour drive, hike the high trail section for 2–3 hours with gorge views 3,790 m deep. Option C: Transfer north to Shangri-La (3 hrs by bus, 3,200 m altitude). Book onward transport on Trip.com.
Local Transportation Guide
Lijiang Sanyi Airport (LJG) is 30 km south — airport bus ¥20 or taxi ¥80–100 to Old Town. Lijiang Railway Station serves high-speed trains from Kunming (3 hrs), Dali (1.5 hrs). Old Town is pedestrian-only in the core — wheeled luggage is painful on cobblestones; use a backpack or hotel porter carts. Blue minibuses (¥1–2) connect Old Town to Shuhe and the railway station. For Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: tourist bus from Red Sun Square (¥20) or join a day tour. DiDi works within the city.
Foreigner-Friendly Food Guide
Naxi and Tibetan-influenced cuisine: cured pork ribs (腊排骨火锅), wild mushroom hotpots, yak butter tea, and Naxi grilled fish. Old Town restaurants range from tourist traps on Sifang Street to excellent local spots on side alleys — follow Chinese diners, not English menus on main streets. Baba (Naxi flatbread) is a cheap street snack. Western cafes exist for breakfast. Altitude increases alcohol sensitivity — go easy on barley wine (青稞酒) on arrival day.
Ticket Booking Tips
Old Town maintenance fee: ¥50 (collected at gates, valid multiple days). Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: combined ticket ¥200–280 depending on cable car tier — book on Trip.com, limited daily quota. Mufu Palace: ¥40. Black Dragon Pool: free with maintenance fee receipt. Impression Lijiang show: ¥280–480. Tiger Leaping Gorge entry: ¥45. Snow Mountain tickets sell out in peak season — book 3–7 days ahead. Bring passport for all entries.
Travel Do's & Don'ts
- Do acclimatize on arrival — Lijiang is 2,400 m; take it easy day one, drink water, skip alcohol.
- Do buy oxygen before the glacier cable car if you have had altitude issues before.
- Do visit Black Dragon Pool early morning for the mountain reflection before wind ripples the water.
- Do wear grippy shoes — Old Town cobblestones are slippery when wet.
- Don't drag roller suitcases through Old Town — cobblestones destroy wheels and your patience.
- Don't trust "free tea ceremony" invitations in shops — classic overpriced tea and herb scam.
